The
ATPS (Advanced Tactical Parachute System) Program was initiated
by the U.S. Army to develop a parachute system to replace the standard
issue T-10 parachute system that has been in use since the 1950's.
Principally used for mass tactical assaults and designed to handle
a gross weight of 250 pounds, the T-10 has served the military well,
but today's Airborne Soldiers are conducting parachute assaults
weighing-in at nearly 400 pounds. They are larger than the soldiers
of yesterday, and carry more equipment and supplies.
A total of 58 requirements are mandated in the ATPS Operational
Requirements Document (ORD), including a stipulation for a parachute
system that is compatible with all current military aircraft used
for airborne missions and compatibility with ancillary items such
as the Interceptor body armor, MOLLE rucksack and Land Warrior
system.
