The PHAOS
(Parachutists High Altitude Oxygen System) is designed to
meet the high-altitude parachutist's mission requirements.
The PHAOS integrates an MBU-12P mask assembly with an automatic
diluter/demand regulator (as opposed to a constant flow system),
exhalation valve, hose assembly and oxygen supply system (various
capacities). The automatic diluter/demand regulator maximizes
the effective use of oxygen which is consistent with mission
objectives and individual parachutist's requirements. It provides
programmed oxygen dilution through the full range of altitudes.
The oxygen supply system includes a toggle-lever operated
on/off valve, pressure gauge, relief valve and reducing regulator.
An inlet fitting check valve assembly provides for interconnection
to an external oxygen supply console for pre-breathing while
on-board the aircraft.
The PHAOS provides automatic, 100% oxygen breathing when connected
to a pre-breathing oxygen console and programmed dilution
when breathing from the individual oxygen supply. This system
was developed by integrating component concepts tested to
military specifications and meets all applicable oxygen system
specifications.
